Microsoft reports 58% of nation state attacks from Russia

In a recent report from Microsoft- “Microsoft Digital Defense Report – October 2021”, the majority of nation state attacks are originating in Russia. The United States was the primary focus of attacks followed by Ukraine, UK and NATO allies. Spear Phishing continues to be a primary attack vector and ransomware remains a highly effective way to financially extort commercial businesses and government agencies. Various ransomware pre-made attack kits are readily available- allowing even low skilled attackers the ability to launch successful attacks. In addition, supply chains continue to be a growing attack target, as highlighted by the Solar Winds breach which has also been attributed to Russian threat actors. The Microsoft report has a wealth of data related to the global state of cyber security and can be found here.
